Some of Italy’s finest wines are produced in Umbria, Sagrantino and Rosso of Montefalco, Torgiano red, Orvieto Classico, Grechetto of Todi and the white and reds of the Colli Amerini just a few of the most famous labels.
Montefalco
Enjoying a charming geographic position, perched on the summit of one of the Ameno hills rising up in the center of the valleys of Clitunno, Topini and Tevere, the town has been defined the ‘RINGHIERA of Umbria’. Famous also for the frescoes adorning the walls of its churches, a visit to Montefalco is a must for those studying the history of Umbrian art. The sanctuaries of Montefalco are an indication of the town’s importance in past centuries.
Orvieto and Grechetto
Barrels of wine from Orvieto were regularly sent to the refectories of popes and Roman nobility; and given that in the past centuries these gifts were one of the mist certain ways of attaining the protection of the powerful, the city made sure that its wine production was copious and the quality of the product excellent.
The Amerini Hills
In a landscape considered by many to be amongst the most beautiful in the whole of Italy’s Umbria region, the ring of hills surrounding the ancient town of Amelia has for centuries been ideal territory for vineyards where the grapes used in the production of quite superlative wines is cultivated.
