Tour of Assisi

The city of Assisi, the origins of which are still uncertain, was inhabited by the Umbri and then the Romans, the traces of whose settlement here are still visible. The name of the city is inexorably linked to the figure of Francis, whose proclamation as saint in 1228, made the Umbrian city an important site of religious worship, sentiment which reached its maximum expression in the beautiful works of art and architecture for which Assisi is famous.

Land of the Franciscans
It was among the rural communities living in the countryside surrounding Assisi that St Francis chose to communicate his faith. The convent of San Damiano, just outside Assisi, in the direction of Santa Maria degli Angeli is easily reached via the ‘pathway through the olives’. It was here that St Francis heard the crucifix utter the words ‘Vade Francisco et repara domum meam’. It was from that moment that St Francis decided to sell all his worldly goods and repair the ancient oratory.
It was here again, in 1224, that St Francis wrote his ‘Laudes Creaturarum’. From 1212 to 1253 the convent offered hospitality to Saint Claire and her following of Clarisse nuns.
The hermitage - Eremo delle Carceri di S.Maria degli Angei e la Porziuncola – is also well worthy of visit.
