The city of Assisi, the origins of which are still uncertain, was inhabited by the Umbri and then the Romans, the traces of whose settlement here are still visible. The name of the city is inexorably linked to the figure of Francis, whose proclamation as saint in 1228, made the Umbrian city an important site of religious worship, sentiment which reached its maximum expression in the beautiful works of art and architecture for which Assisi is famous.
